Another US Navy warship accident in Asian waters took place early
Monday, the fourth this year. The USS John S. McCain, a Navy
guided-missile destroyer, collided with an oil tanker east of Singapore.
Defense Secretary James Mattis said Monday he supports a decision by
the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson to conduct a "broader
inquiry" into the recent accidents and "to determine any causal
factors." Mattis spoke to reporters while traveling in Jordan. In the
wake of Monday's collision, Richardson is expected to order a rare
operational pause across the entire Navy, a US defense...

SEOUL — A frantic search continued Monday for 10 sailors missing

the collision involving the USS John S. McCain — the second such
incident between a U.S. warship and commercial vessel in the Pacific
region this summer. The John S. McCain arrived at the Changi Naval Base
in Singapore, and photos showed a large hole in its side at the
waterline. More than 14 hours after the collision...

Chinese carmaker Great Wall has expressed interest in buying Fiat
Chrysler Automobiles, an audacious ambition that would meet significant
political and financial hurdles even if the Italian-American car giant
agreed to negotiations. A spokesman for the Chinese group — best known

the Financial Times on Monday: “We have always had the interest and
intention to acquire FCA.” FCA, which owns the Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo and
Maserati brands, has been searching for a buyer in order to cut the

The Great Wall is smaller than many imagine. The same goes for the
Chinese car company of the same name. The structure is not visible from
space, after all, and the Great Wall Motor Company is not big enough to
buy Fiat Chrysler — on its own. If Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne and
family shareholders want to unlock value, they need another way to do
it. Pity. The idea that Great Wall might buy the Italian-American
automotive group had the superficial credibility that comic Stephen
Colbert would call “truthiness”. Great Wall said it favoured the
acquisition. The scale of the Chinese market was p...

London house vendors cannot let go of the myth of everlasting
price inflation. When the hipster-central borough of Hackney has seen
offer prices rise 120 per cent in a decade, it is easy to see why.
Estate agents do not see things the same way. They need to do a better
job of convincing sellers to sell. Forget Rightmove data showing prices
in London rose 1.6 per cent year on year in August. Asking prices are
only one half of the transaction. Actual sales are falling at both ends
of the spectrum. Luxe town houses and micro-homes smaller than a parking
