China’s Tencent is spinning off parts of its empire in a move that
will help incentivise the units’ management — but is unlikely to

known for its massively popular WeChat app and mobile payments service,
also owns a range of businesses designed to keep users in its ecosystem
from the moment they wake up: paying for meals, chatting, booking taxis
and gaming. So far, it has largely kept its empire under one roof. But

Ever since Ruth Benedict applied the terms “guilt culture” and
“shame culture” to explain what she perceived as a fundamental contrast
in the psychological makeup of Japanese and Americans, the applicability
of the guilt-vs-shame dichotomy has been a controversial and
much-debated topic both with relation to the study of Japanese culture
and with regard to its relevance for the anthropological study of
culture in general…Many Japanese have reacted strongly against being
labeled a “shame culture” and have interpreted Benedict’s work as a
pejorative account of their culture written by an outs...

The discount retailer B&M has set its sights on the
convenience grocery market following the acquisition of Heron Food

said the deal completed today and put an enterprise value of £152m on

Germany’s carmakers will promise to upgrade millions of diesel
vehicles to reduce their harmful emissions, as they scramble to head off
a mounting backlash against a technology that is critical to the future
of the German auto industry. They will make the pledge at a “diesel
summit” in Berlin on Wednesday that brings together the bosses of all
the country’s big car companies as well as ministers and regional
leaders in a sign of the alarm spreading in German business circles and
in the corridors of power in Berlin over the diesel crisis. It comes as

Standard Chartered has reported an 82 per cent rise in first-half
net profits, but shares in the emerging markets bank fell amid investor
frustration at how long its turnround is taking. Investors were
disappointed that StanChart decided not to restart its dividend —
despite its improved profitability and stronger capital position. Andy
Halford, finance director, said it would examine the dividend question
again at the end of the year when it hopes uncertainty over regulatory
capital requirements will have cleared. Shares in the London-listed
bank, which have gained 40 per cent in the past ...

This year’s best cookbook is Jonathan Meades’s The Plagiarist in
the Kitchen. Taking as its motto James Joyce’s “God made food; the Devil
cooks”, it is a counterblast to celebrity chefs, to “inventiveness” and
to a world of “waffle-crusted chicken bites, maple-syrup floss,
Coca-Cola drizzle, salted-air foam (!?), micro coriander”, all of which
Meades claims not to have made up himself. At its core, the book asserts
that good cooks steal but steal well. Meades disparagingly quotes TS
Eliot: “The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is
unique,” and, more approvingly, Gore V...

The chairman of Fosun, the Chinese conglomerate and serial
dealmaking group, did something unusual as he flew back from Paris to
Shanghai last week. Straight after inking a €625m deal for Fosun and a
partner to buy a French margarine company, Guo Guangchang (pictured)
took a rest from M&A and decided it was time for some expository
writing. The result was an extraordinary letter from a Chinese
businessman, which Guo published this week. In it, Guo praised the
Chinese government’s efforts to halt what he described as an irrational
overseas shopping spree that has been playing out across the ...

A bank regulator appointed by President Donald Trump will on
Wednesday take a first step towards loosening the Volcker rule banning
banks from placing market bets with their own capital, targeting a
post-crisis prohibition that is reviled on Wall Street. The Office of
the Comptroller of the Currency, which oversees national banks, will
initiate the process of amending the Volcker rule by formally seeking
public comment from banks and others on how it is working, say people
familiar with its plans. The Volcker rule, which bans banks from
proprietary trading, is one of the least popular parts...

Chinese tourists flocking to European and Asian capitals in record
numbers this summer will be spending less on shopping and more on
dining and sightseeing as overseas travel becomes more mainstream and
the lure of foreign prices diminishes. Retailers across the world have
come to rely on Chinese tourists but the proportion citing shopping as
their main travel motivation plunged to one-third this year from more
than two-thirds in 2016, according to an annual survey by booking site
