members of his family in his milieu. Their styles are contrasting, from
Tilda Swinton’s kitchen table conversations to Colin MacCabe’s
black-and-white political panel discussion (Berger was a life-long
Marxist). What the four segments share is a reverence for Berger that
too often becomes irksome: people nod sagely or gaze adoringly as he
ruminates. Still, he was a formidable thinker, and h...

The view from above tells the truth of Istanbul. The rhino-horn of
land at Seraglio Point on the edge of the Bosphorus, originally
Byzantium then Constantinople, has become a neural network of urban
development that stretches 100 miles from the Black Sea to the Sea of
Marmara. Istanbul-born Orhan Pamuk uses his city’s creep as the
topography for his new novel; unstable memory is its shifting landscape.
Saturated with sympathy and sense of place, the book charts a boy’s
journey into manhood and Turkey’s into irreversible change. Cem, the
bookish, jejune child of an unfaithful, absent politic...

Earlier this year, I had a chance to chat with Steve Bannon,
Donald Trump’s chief strategist until he was ousted last week. I met him
inside his so-called war room at the White House and, like most
visitors, I was struck by the battle plans that lined his den: white
posters laying out his goals, listed by priority and ticked off (or
not). But I was even more intrigued by what was showing on his
television screens. These days some White House figures, such as
vice-president Mike Pence, work in a room with just one TV, which is
invariably tuned to Fox News, since this is the channel most frie...

I negoziati erano stati
bloccati dalla Cina subito dopo l...

If you were to poll the British wine trade as to its most popular
member, chances are it would be a 60-year-old Canadian with an
apparently indefatigable sense of humour, a fine appetite for both good
food and good gossip, and an eye permanently on his phone — to judge
from the speed with which he answers emails, even though for almost half
the year he is abroad in vine-growing parts of the world. Others may be
admired for various specific qualities but David Gleave, founder of
Liberty Wines, is a successful all-rounder who does not throw his weight
around, is unfailingly polite and knows w...
